Living in Hastings
Hastings and Napier are known as “The Bay Cities” and are within 20 km of each other. They have a combined population of over 124,400, making the combined urban area the fifth-largest by population in New Zealand. The Hawke’s Bay is commonly referred to as the ‘Fruit Bowl of New Zealand’ and is New Zealand’s largest food growing region with a wide range of produce. The region is famous for its stone fruit, vegetables, and wineries.
Many students find part-time work within the horticulture industry and associated businesses including food processing, agricultural services and logistics. The service industry and tourism sectors are also growing rapidly. The Hawke’s Bay has almost twice the sunshine hours (2,090 hours) in comparison to the Bay of Plenty Tauranga (1,214 hours) ensuring a longer period for seasonal work opportunities.
